Developed by a multinational ๐, multilingual ๐ฃ, and ecologically-oriented ๐ฑ team of students at Sciences Po Paris's รcole du Management et de l'Innovation, BioScape is a companion for your daily adventures in your city. It's a way to interact with friends, let your imagination run wild, and understand the ecological impact of your consumption habits.
BioScape uses geolocalisation to place you, and the friends you're connected with, on a real-time map so you can see where your friends are in relation to you.
BioScape is built using MapBox and Bitmoji API, the backend tech behind Snapchat and other super-popular social media apps, so you and your friends' positions aren't just generic points on a boring map: they're your faces, styled by you in the Bitmoji app.
...so you can play as little or as long as you want.
Eat a kebab...
...take a walk to the Eiffel Tower...
...even check out what's going on in environmental politics...
...you can do whatever you want, realistic or totally ballistic, in the BioScape world โ all while seeing exactly how much carbon each of your activities emits ๐จ๐จ๐จ
You can track everything your avatar does, eats, or buys on the app's built-in carbon meter. Just select the activity, item consumed, or item purchased to add it to your avatar's daily carbon consumption.
While exploring and living your avatar life, you can play 3 different types of real-time games.
Games are linked to places you go on the map, whether you're in GPS mode or simulator mode. If you're in GPS mode, you'll be able to play games within a close range of physical proximity; in simulator mode, you can send your avatar to whatever gaming centers you want!
In Mission Mode, you'll get assigned a taskโrelated to the place where you or your avatar are.
Museums and cultural centers, for example, contain mini-quizzes about sustainable art which you can complete for points...
...and even sitting around in your own home will give you access to a race against the clock to turn out all the lights in your apartment, as you would if you were going out for the day with the planet in mind.
You might click on a random building and click on "Mission Modeโ.
You read the rule of the game:
"Maddie was late this morning and left her apartment without paying attention. She will be away for a month. Lights are still on, top water is still running, the TVโs still onโฆ help her correct all of these mistakes and decrease her carbon footprint today. You have 30 seconds."
When you complete the game, it will be written on your screen how much you reduced her footprint.
Switching 4 lights off: 4*48.4g of CO2 per hour = 139 kg of CO2 for the month = 139 packages of flour ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐
Turning the TV off: 0.088 kg CO2/viewer hour = 64kg / month = 64 packages of flour ๐๐๐๐๐๐
Direct your avatar to the Centre Pompidou, Parisโs premiere museum for contemporary and modern art. ๐จ
Once youโre there, click on the museum, and let the game begin !
Youโll be asked to help decide which sustainable art should be brought into the museumโs collection. A series of pictures of art pieces that the museum is considering buying will show up on screen.
Scroll through them, read the description of the materials in each one, and youโll be able to choose the one that is the most โsustainableโ in terms of its composition, production, and the mission of its creator.
In Duo mode, you play with another player (which may be someone on your friends list, or someone you donโt know, if youโre open to it !).
Every day, there is a ยซ challenge of the day ยป. It is something you, as a player and app user, need to do in real life, like ยซ take public transportation ยป etc. If you take a picture to prove you did it and upload it to the app, youโll earn one footprint.
You registered as a daily driver on Bioscape. You usually take your car. One of the challenges of the day will be related to the โtransportationโ category, as it has to do with what impacts your carbon footprint the most.
You'll see a blinking C on your screen in the upper right corner (for โChallenge of the dayโ) to tell you that you need to complete the โchallenge of the dayโ.
When you click on it, this text will appear:
โChallenge of the Day: Take public transportation: Save money, Save the world. Donโt forget to share a picture.โ
You decide to do it, and instead of taking your car, you take the metro.
You can plug in your trip starting point and destination on the app, and the app will calculate the impact you had by not taking your car. You'll even get a visual representation using everyday items of how much carbon you actually saved.
Metro:
La Dรฉfense โก๏ธโก๏ธ Bois de Vincennes : 57.76 = 0.05 kg CO2 = one egg ๐ฅ
Car :
if before 8pm on any given day, youโve succeeded in doing 1 duo, 1 mission and 1 challenge, you can participate in the HQ trivia-style Daily Trivia Challenge.
The game consists of 10 questions about the relationship between humans and the environment.
The questions are multiple-choice with three options, and you have 10 seconds to answer each one. โฑ
The game plays live every day at 8pm GMT, so you can see how many people are playing; plus, it's linked to the built-in MapBox GPS map, which allows players, if they opt in, to see where other players in their area are and check out their stats in the game. ๐
